I'm writing this in Seattle, where we're spending time with Henry and Eloise and their parents. The only building going on here has been with blocks or sand. Eloise, now four years old, wants to spend the night in our house the next time she comes to Virginia. (We'd better get back to work the second our plane touches down.)
More progress on the build before heading out of town: We finished framing the 8-foot wall sections all the way around and put in nailers where we'll build a couple interior walls. Then we sandwiched two 2x8 boards with a 1/2-inch strip of plywood in the middle and installed the beam that will carry the weight of our upper roof and finished up framing 8-foot walls all the way around. And, right before we left, we constructed three framing sections that will sit atop the beam and hold the six clerestory windows. Once we put on the plywood sheathing and house wrap (plus the roof—can't forget that!), we'll install the windows, which are ready and waiting for us to schedule delivery. First step upon our return: remove the blue tarps we strung up in an attempt to protect the build from the elements. (We'll soon see if they achieved that!)
