The bureau we turned into our screen house kitchen got soaked a few times too many this soggy summer. The back was soggy and had started to get moldy. The drawer bottoms were sagging. Pulling it out to work on it was a hard first step....when it occurred to Bill that if he put wheels on the bottom, the piece would be easy to move. We could clean behind it and, more importantly, we could pull it away from the screening whenever a big storm heads our way. We already had our "refrigerator" (cooler) and trash/recycling box on wheels for that reason.
So the bureau got new bottoms and back—and six wheels. Now, it's a breeze to pull out whenever we want to.
We were so happy with our wheeled bureau, we decided to give the table in the screen house its own set, as well. Now we can pull the table out easily when we want to get more people around it. Next up: the table in the "main house" will get rolling, too.
We have come to realize that wheels are a tiny house's BFF (or at least a very good friend). Of course, there are the wheels under our THOW, but I'm talking here about all the wheels inside our house. They make reconfiguring things easy when we have friends over; our wheeled ottomans/storage boxes become seating across the room in seconds. Our wheeled nightstands make it possible to clean the narrow space between our bed and the walls. Wheels on our indoor firewood box make it glide in and out when we have a fire going in the wood stove.
Wheels offer flexibility with ease. I find myself looking at the sofa now, thinking it might just need to be wheeled around, too. And, hmmmmm, what else...?
