We got a call in August from Tianna Mañón, an Urban Turf writer who'd seen this blog. She asked if we'd share our story of downsizing from a traditional home to this little-bitty one we're (still) building. A couple of people have told me they couldn't find the article. So, here's the link and the article...

Hey there....perusing and came across your site. Am I reading this right that tiny homes are allowed in Loudon County? I live in Montgomery County, MD and am looking to move to a tiny home in the next couple years, but need to be in driving distance of work...which perhaps means Loudon County if tiny homes are permissible there. I LOVE your site and your home and would love to learn more about the lifestyle and the laws there in Loudon. Thanks so much!!!!!

Hello, Lisa. Where to put a tiny house in the DC area is a giant issue. Most tiny housers try to "fly under the radar," because zoning codes favor (and, in many cases, insist on) larger houses. One thing that helps us is that our legal address is actually our friend's traditional house on the same property where we rent a room. Our "travel trailer" is permitted in the county (and we pay taxes on it). That also helps us. Plus, we're on a private road in a super rural location, and all the neighbors want us there. For more ideas, a pro on the subject, Ryan Mitchell of The Tiny Life, has an e-book that could help: http://thetinylife.com/tiny-house-building-codes/ . (I haven't read it, but Ryan's an expert on just about every aspect of tiny houses, so I imagine it's good.) Also, Lee Pera and Jay Austin of Boneyard Studios have been very active in talking to the powers-that-be in DC about allowing tiny houses (where their houses are located). Here's an article Jay wrote on the subject: http://boneyardstudios.org/2015/09/10/tiny-houses-and-more-some-exciting-and-less-exciting-zoning-changes-in-dcs-near-future/ There's also a MeetUp group that you might want to join (if you haven't already): http://www.meetup.com/tiny-house-enthusiasts-dc/#suggested Hope this helps! Good luck with your tiny house plans--I hope you'll stay in touch. --Jody
