We always have projects simmering on the back burner. Every once in a while, we decide it's time to turn up the heat on one. Last week, we decided it was time to get cooking on the lattice we'd always planned to put up under the deck.
We had lattice up on one side already, where we wanted to grow grapes vines. The lattice serves a purpose there, so it went up first. It's understandable when we focus on the practical—giving the grapes something to grow on, building a box for the fire pit, setting up compost bins, expanding the vegetable garden—but it's especially enjoyable when we take the time to do something just because we like the way it looks. The lattice we put up last week is simply ornamental; it looks good to us.
Putting it up felt like a vacation. There was still hard work involved, but because it was optional, there was no feeling of obligation. I think the next time we get overwhelmed by things "we have to do," we'll try to remember to do something just because we want to.
